5 Reasons Why We Still Love the Heron Glacier 5 Years On

Over the years we have set about reviewing VALLON’s Heron Glacier sunglasses. 5 years on, we thought we’d re-test their rigour and share our thoughts on these classic shades.

5-years on, still going strong?

Regular followers of Oldschoolers will know that we are long-standing fans of VALLON’s Heron Glacier sunglasses. Now in their 4th generation, these shades have become a firm favorite in the mountaineering community - worn by adventurers and athletes from Denali to Everest. Authentic glacier glasses style paired with the latest performance materials - and sold at an affordable price - for us, these sunglasses take the edge.

Top reasons why they remain our favorite..

1. Protective side shields

Based on a classic alpine design, the Heron Glacier features leather side shields and a detachable centerpiece to block out sunlight and protect against glare. This reduces eye strain and protects against strong sunlight, allowing for unrivaled all-day comfort.

2. Ultra-lightweight TR90® frame

The frame is made from Swiss-invented TR90® polyamide. This is the material of choice for sports sunglasses where performance is key due to its lightweight durability. VALLON’s choice of material means the Heron Glacier are comfortable to wear, even during long, difficult days out on the mountains.

3. Adjustable stay-on temples

Stay-on temples that fit snugly around your ears are a crucial feature during serious mountaineering when you cannot risk losing your sunglasses. A common issue with stay-on temples is that they can cause pain if they press against the ears for long periods of time. However, the material of the Heron Glacier is fully adjustable and can be shaped in any shape or form, allowing both a more secure fit around your ears and preventing any pressure on the ears.

4. Shatterproof anti-fog lenses

The Heron Glacier lenses are made from polycarbonate, known for being incredibly impact resistant. This is important from a safety perspective, and anecdotally has been a real eye-saver on occasions. Additionally, the lens is treated with anti-fog coating to ensure fog-free vision, while the brown tint is the ideal color choice for increased contrasts and depth perception during both summer and winter activities.

5. 100% UVA+UVB Protection

The Heron Glacier feature lenses that are UV400 rated, guaranteeing 100% protection against harmful UVA+UVB rays. Category 4 lenses have a 6% VLT which, combined with the leather side shields, means your eyes are fully protected even in extremely bright conditions commonly found in high alpine environments.

6. Every pair sold means 1kg of plastic waste is cleaned up

Outdoorsy people detest plastic pollution, so the knowledge that 1kg of plastic waste will be recycled when purchasing the Heron Glacier is a nice touch. In addition, all shipments from VALLON are made using plastic-free packaging, and the sunglasses come protected in a faux-leather case with a microfiber cleaning cloth.
